In a time when most automakers are phasing out large combustion engines, Toyota is taking a bold step in the opposite direction. The brand has confirmed that it’s developing an all-new V8—modern, twin-turbocharged, and designed to power the next generation of its high-performance vehicles.

This upcoming V8 is part of Toyota’s new modular engine family, an architecture that supports everything from efficient four-cylinders to this muscular eight-cylinder variant. Engineers are focusing on extracting significantly more power than the current offerings, and the engine will be paired with hybrid assistance to boost performance without turning it into a plug-in hybrid.

One of Toyota’s GR performance models is expected to debut this engine, using the most aggressive tuning intended for track-focused driving. Meanwhile, Lexus will receive a more refined version aimed at smooth power delivery and upscale performance. Sharing the engine across brands allows Toyota to streamline development while giving each division a unique driving character.

Toyota’s decision stands out in a market trending toward downsizing. Instead of abandoning big displacement, the company is demonstrating that high horsepower and electrification can coexist. With this new V8, Toyota aims to keep the emotional appeal of a powerful combustion engine alive—just updated for the modern era.
